There are so many outfits or masks we can put on that temporarily hide the inadequacies we fight.

We all want to be someone. Someone pleasing to the world. Worthwhile. Worth fighting for. Known. Valued. Respected. Understood.

The problem is that while these outfits seem to give us a sense of self-worth they are not secure, but rather are like shifting sand. I learned this at 18 when I found myself in a dark, debilitating depression. As my lifeless self lay in the psychiatric ward of a hospital, everything I had placed my worth in was stripped from me (my achievements, my reputation, my beauty, my dreams). Humbled and broken, I was free for the first time to discover my new identity as one who surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. That I AM:

  • God’s child. (John 1:12)
  • Redeemed and forgiven of all my sins. (Col. 1:13-14 )
  • God’s workmanship. (Ephesians 2:10)
  • Chosen and appointed to bear fruit. (John 15:16)
  • Complete in Christ. (Col. 2:9-10)
  • Established, anointed and sealed by God. (2 Cor. 1:21-22)
  • A citizen of heaven. (Philippians 3:20)

This is the wardrobe I will wear forever. My true identity!

What are the masks, labels or outfits you hide behind?
