Oscar Winner Lupita Nyong'o on Beauty and Compassion

by Erin McNeely

This past Sunday the world watched as the talented Lupita Nyong’o accepted an Oscar for her powerful performance as Patsey in ’12 Years a Slave.’ Just days before her win she gave this empowering speech on beauty, adequacy and compassion. It is definitely worth watching, tissues in hand. Remember, like Lupita, you are beautiful and valued just the way you are, created in the image of the perfect creator.
And what my mother meant when she said you can’t eat beauty was that you can’t rely on how you look to sustain you. What is fundamentally beautiful is compassion for yourself and for those around you. That kind of beauty enflames the heart and enchants the soul.”

Congratulations, Lupita!
