When I was little, I always enjoyed being able to visit my mom at the office building where she worked. Her office was up on the top floor of a medical center and I remember being so excited to walk into that building on the ground floor and wait for the elevator. The doors would open, and Dad would say, “Okay. We need to wait for the people to exit first. Then we can get on.” Once we were standing inside that weird metal box with the old wooden railings, he would let me (or my little sister if she was in tow) push the button for the 4th floor. It made me feel important and special to be able to put my finger on that circular piece of plastic and, as the doors closed, I remember the anticipation of ascending a few floors and being able to run down the hallway, push open her door, and hug my mother a few moments after the doors opened again.

Wow. What a feeling to be able to push the button.

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9

God nudged me a while back to start something that, at the time, seemed strange and, well, impossible. He put a small and simple circumstance in front of me that was just interesting enough to get me thinking more about it than I normally would have. That thinking led to a chain reaction, a fantastic spark inside my brain that went from thinking to questioning to searching for the answer to realizing “Hey, wait a second. I have the answer, and I know what He wants me to do.”

Letting God direct our steps isn’t easy.. After all, we have our own ideas, our own agenda, our own plans for how to make something awesome. We can plan it all out the way we think it should go, but at the end of the day, it’s His will and His plan that win out. He sparked an idea in me, and it was really the chance for me to bend and move closer to one of His callings on my life. His timing is perfect, and there were moments along the way when I would have stepped out without Him to do or say something. Like a fisherman, He would calmly reel me back in and remind me that I needed to wait, and then we could move forward.

What a blessing: to watch Him work, move, get everything into place, and then let me push the button. Me. Who am I? I am His precious creation and He loves me. That is why He let me do it. And the anticipation of what will come next is exciting. It’s exciting because He’s taking me with Him, and we are ascending together toward something fantastic waiting on the other end.

Has God ever let you hit the Send button on one of His miracles?
