Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus

12 Jan 2012

Below is a video from our From A Guy’s Perspective Contributor, Jeff Bethke. It went absolutely viral yesterday and has already reached over 800,000 views. Yay Jeff—we’re so proud of you! In Jeff’s own words, this is:

“A poem I wrote to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion. In the scriptures Jesus received the most opposition from the most religious people of his day. At it’s core Jesus’ gospel and the good news of the Cross is in pure opposition to self-righteousness/self-justification. Religion is man centered, Jesus is God-centered. This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone, or despair because you can’t do your own list of rules and feel “not good enough” for God. With Jesus though you have humble confident joy because He represents you, you don’t represent yourself and His sacrifice is perfect putting us in perfect standing with God!”

Take four minutes to watch the video and let us know your thoughts…

How does this change, reinforce or influence your view of Jesus?

Thank you so much today you have brought me back to christ I was making excuses for why I didn’t need to think about my actions. I am so greatful for your videos I have shared them with so many!

  6. I just found this blog through Jeff’s Facebook page, and found him through all of my friends posting about him yesterday! His video brought me near tears, as I’m a struggling Catholic finding Jesus in ways I never have before… I’ve been attending a Christian church and Jeff’s message hit to the core of everything I’ve been going through emotionally and spiritually!!! I’m looking forward to more of his videos and more of this blog! 🙂

  7. This video doesn’t make EVERYONE happy. Remember that it’s an insult to many brothers and sisters. I, for one, am tired of seeing it everywhere.

Great job! I believe this honors God and helps with the confusion many have between following Christ va following religion.

Truly incredible and such a great representation of Gods heart! It’s not about living strictly by the bible, it’s about loving and reaching His people! He is such a God of restoration and with that he is a God of love! We are not called to judge, we are called to love! We may slip up but we keep trying to have a heart like His.

  11. It was refreshing to see a video about Jesus on You Tube’s homepage. In addition to all Jeff said, it is good Jeff mentioned that he does love church and does love the Bible, etc. God is still using the established church in America for salvation and sanctification and so the challenge we all face is to live within the freedom of grace that Jeff talks about while also appropriately serving and functioning within the structures of the local church. If we can balance the two we will see God’s grace and glory in our midst which will convict and attract the unbeliever to the beauty and majesty of our Creator.

  12. This is such an amazing video! I showed it to my parents too and they loved it! 🙂

  13. I saw this early yesterday morning and quickly posted on Facebook and Twitter. I was in awe of how many coworkers today told me they were impacted by it and they showed it to other people as well. This is the message people need to know about Jesus.

  14. It’s almost at 10 million hits now. Insane. Guess that was a meant to be made video.

I like a lot of the messages in the clip but I worry when we forget that Jesus himself intended us to live under a religion. Even though we’re forgiven, we still have to heal and religion is in place to help us subject ourselves to God’s will and become good Christians.
