Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide

by Allie Marie Smith

Hi Girls,

As a 501c3 non-profit organization, the first part of Wonderfully Made’s mission is to help young women know their true value and worth, which we believe is found through a relationship with the God who beautifully and intentionally created you.
The second part of our mission is to inspire a generation of girls and young women to live outward- focused lives. As the founder of an organization that seeks to instill lasting value and worth in women, the book “Half the Sky” has radically influenced, inspired and motivated me – while also leaving me heartbroken over the tragic stories of girls and women who do not enjoy the opportunities and freedom most of us reading this have. I believe Jesus was and is the world’s number one advocate and champion of women, so as girls who follow Him, we are called to be the same.

I know many of you world-changers are already well aware of this important and eye-opening book but for those of you who aren’t I strongly encourage you to read it, watch the recent DVD and make a personal commitment to be part of the solution.

The Book

“Half the Sky” is a passionate call to arms against our era’s most pervasive human rights violation: the oppression of women and girls in the developing world.

With Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn as our guides, we undertake an odyssey through Africa and Asia to meet the extraordinary women struggling there, among them a Cambodian teenager sold into sex slavery and an Ethiopian woman who suffered devastating injuries in childbirth. Drawing on the breadth of their combined reporting experience, Kristof and WuDunn depict our world with anger, sadness, clarity, and, ultimately, hope. Available here.
