We have this hope as an anchor for the soul firm and secure. -Hebrews 6:19
The anchor has been a symbol of hope dating as far back as 100-400 AD. The apostle Paul used the symbol of the anchor in Hebrews 6:19 to describe the hope we have in our Savior. Jewish people, who were heavily persecuted for their faith in Jesus, grabbed ahold of this symbol and used it to identify who they were to one another. The anchor was used on tombstones as evidence of their faith and hope in eternal life with Jesus in Heaven. The symbol has deep meaning with the symbol of the cross evident and as a symbol of the Ichthus, representing Jesus…the Fisherman, his disciples, fisher of men, and his followers little fishes.
Today, the anchor continues to be a symbol of our faith and hope in Jesus. Our hope holds us firm and secure, always looking toward the eternal. We may have trials and tribulations of all kinds. We may suffer greatly and be persecuted by others and face evil of all kinds…but we hold onto the day we will be set free and count it all for joy that our suffering is not without purpose.
