What is your God story? How did you come to faith in Christ, and how did that transform you?
Twelve years ago, I was at a bus stop in college when I got a call that shattered my world. My mom died. In my grief, I rejected God, or who I thought He was, and spiraled down a dark path of addiction, abortions, and toxic relationships. Years later, however, in the middle of a Halloween rave, God broke through to my heart. I felt His nearness, and these words washed over me: You are not alone, precious one. There’s never been a moment you were forgotten. I weep for your loss, and I am moving you into My marvelous light. When God’s presence collided with my life that day, I said “yes” to intimacy with Him. In the midst of abandonment and grief, I experienced peace and belonging. Soon I began to build an authentic relationship with Jesus, and it transformed everything for me.

What are some challenges you have faced as a girl or young woman, and how have you persevered through them?
I’ve struggled with seeking validation, comfort, and contentment in the empty promises of our world. I often shrink God out of my own fears of being unprovided for, and I let those fears encourage actions of comparison and entitlement. I’ve grown in wisdom and self-control, however, through my Biblically sound and non-watered-down, Gospel-preaching church. My community group, women’s discipleship group, and wives book club have also been helpful. They hold me accountable, lift me up in prayer, and fill my life with satisfaction in Christ. We all just want to belong, so when we find a family in which we can consistently show up broken, it produces a sense of safety—a safety that the Lord wants us to live out of, and that helps me persevere through any and all temptation.

How do you live out and grow in your faith each day?
My husband shoots out of bed each day and jumps into his Bible or a book on prayer, so that lights a fire under me to do the same and to read before picking up my calendar.

I also, honestly, grow in my faith by being called out: called out by those who love me and speak life where I see death. Again, a healthy community is a beautiful place to grow in safety and to be reminded that Jesus is not disappointed in you. Instead, He has compassion for you.

What is your favorite verse right now?
“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

What message of encouragement do you have for other young women struggling with similar experiences as you?
Don’t fall for it. Doubt the lies about God and doubt what seems true in the world. There’s a lot of deception in fame, money, and power. This idea that you can build more, do more, be more, strive more, etc. is a one-way ticket to a life of anxiety, of never feeling like you’re enough, of chasing after the wind, and ultimately of wasting energy pursuing nothing. Jesus lived a simple life and calls us to do the same—to love God, love one another, and love our city. Painful things will happen in life—break ups, loss of loved ones, failures, mistakes, and regret, but if you cling to our God Who renews, restores, and redeems, He will redirect you to His comforting and safe presence.
